The recognition of teacher qualifications in the Commonwealth
SAQA was commissioned by the Commonwealth Secretariat in 2007 to conduct research on teacher qualifications in the 53 Commonwealth member states` leading to the development of a "teacher qualifications comparability table". This request was made to SAQA based on earlier work led by Prof Wally Morrow and Dr James Keevy in 2006 and 2007. Dr James Keevy from SAQA was the lead researcher for the project. Prof Jonathan Jansen was contracted to support Dr Keevy and provide valuable input into the conceptualisation of the research. On behalf of the Education Ministers of the Commonwealth, the Steering Committee on Teacher Qualifications and Professional Recognition met at Stoke Rochford Hall, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom on 8 April 2009 to review the research report. The Steering Committee recommended that the report be presented to Ministers at 17CCEM that will take place in Malaysia in June 2009. The final research report is currently being prepared for printing after which it will be presented at 17CCEM and distributed to relevant officials in all 53 Commonwealth member states.
