SAQA Announces Dr Julie Reddy as CEO
The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) Chairperson Professor Peliwe Lolwana, announces the appointment of Dr Julie Reddy as SAQA’s CEO. Dr Reddy was the former Deputy CEO and had been acting in the role of CEO since December 2019. She holds both a Master of Science (MSc) degree as a Fulbright Scholar, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Cornell University in the USA.
“SAQA needs a transformational leader who will lead it from the ashes of financial woes and retrenchments to reclaim its space in the national education and training sector and on the international stage,” said Dr Reddy.
The global pandemic and resulting lockdown had a devastating impact on SAQA’s financial health. As a Section 3A public entity that continues to exist under the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Act, 2008 as amended, SAQA faced closure if it did not act to reduce its personnel costs. After a drastic restructure designed to best deliver on its mandate within the constraints of a balanced budget, SAQA emerges as a lean, yet agile organisation that is ready to reclaim its spot in the education and training sector.
Professor Lolwana confirmed that the Board will work closely with the new CEO and management team to re-position SAQA’s role. For now, the management’s focus is on implementing the new organisational structure to best deliver on SAQA’s mandated functions.
